Why Do I Need My Braces Adjusted?

Braces need to be adjusted periodically

Braces Need Periodic Ajustments

After your braces have been put on, you might be surprised to learn that you will need to return to our office every three to six weeks to have them adjusted or tightened. To understand why we do this, you first need to know how braces work.

There are several different types of braces, but they all work based on the same principle. By applying force over time, your teeth are slowly pushed into their proper positions. As this movement occurs, your wires and bands are no longer as tight and will need to be replaced to continue the progress that is being made in your mouth. If you are wearing Invisalign clear aligners, the same goal is accomplished by replacing your current tray with the next size down.

As it takes a minimum of three weeks to observe movement of your teeth, this is the most common interval to schedule visits. Adjustment appointments also give us the opportunity to measure your progress and modify your treatment plan if necessary. Your actual interval will vary based on the type of braces that you are wearing and your body’s response to them.

At your appointment, you can expect to have your old wires and elastic ligatures removed and your teeth thoroughly brushed and floss. Next, you will select new colors for your bands and the new bands and wires will be applied. You may experience some tenderness after we are finished, but this won’t last very long.

Wearing braces is a partnership between you and us. When you do your part by practicing good home care and making regular adjustment appointments, we can do our part to ensure that you are getting the best treatment possible. Missing your adjustment appointments will extend the duration of your treatment and could lead to other problems such as tooth decay and gum disease. It won’t take very long so schedule your appointment today.

How Long Does Orthodontic Treatment Take?

Orthodontic Treatment

One of the first questions patients asked after getting braces or retainers is, “when can I get them off?” Depending on the severity of your malocclusion and the appliances used, the answer to that question is unique as the patients we treat! You can rest assured that we won’t keep you in treatment a day longer than is necessary to achieve your dream smile!

Traditional braces: If you have traditional-style braces, expect to be wearing them for 1-3 years. Treatment time varies based on the severity of your alignment issues and scheduling regular orthodontic appointments to tighten the wires. If a bracket should break or come off, have it fixed immediately to prevent extending the duration of your treatment.

InvisAligners: Using x-rays, pictures and impressions of your teeth, we will create a 3-D model that allows us to create a plan for the movement of your teeth. A treatment ranges from 18-30 trays that are replaced every two weeks. For adults, results are usually realized in about a year and the treatment time is comparable to traditional braces for teens. It is vital that you wear your aligners for at least 22 hours each day to achieve the quickest results and replace them at the regularly scheduled intervals.

ClearAligners: Similar to InvisAligners these accelerated braces were invented by our own Dr. Cronauer. ClearAligners can correct mild to moderate issues in as little as three to eight months! Once again, it is necessary to wear as directed to get the best results.

In-Ovation System Braces: Thanks to their self-ligating design, In-Ovation System braces are able to move your teeth quicker than traditional braces, thereby reducing the wearing time by several months.

Retainers: Once your treatment has concluded, we recommend that you wear retainers for at least a year after treatment to prevent your teeth from moving from their new positions. Failure to do so could lead to having to wear braces all over again.

No matter which appliance is chosen for your situation, the best results only come when you completely follow the directions for care at home. Failure to follow these instructions not only results in prolonged treatment, but could also cause damage to your teeth!  For more information about any or all of our tretment services, please visit our website HERE! Are InOvation Braces Right For You?

InOvation Braces

Orthodontic technology has come a long way over the years and our office is proud to be able to keep up with all the new changes and advancements. Patients coming in for braces often ask me about the In-Ovation System, one of the newest advances in braces. In-Ovation Braces are uniquely designed to be self-ligating. Instead of using elastic ties or wire to hold the wire in place like traditional braces, In-Ovation Braces use a clip already built into the bracket to hold the wire in place. The In-Ovation Braces System has three different options to choose from for maximum comfort, affordability, and results.

Why Metal Braces Are Timeless

traditional bracesTraditional braces are still the most commonly requested and used braces in orthodontics. As a dental assistant here at Cronauer & Angelakis, it is easy for me to explain why!

Traditional or metal braces can be used by all age groups for teeth alignment. Pregnant women often ask if they can wear metal braces, and the answer is: yes, you can; they are made from high grade stainless steel and will not affect your pregnancy at all.

About Metal Braces

Metal braces have been around for a long time so they are trusted, and they do the job just as well as any other type of brace. The fact that they have been around for a long time, also makes these braces the most likely ones to be covered by your health insurance scheme. Even if you do not have a health insurance plan, they are still the most affordable type of brace when you have teeth straightening needs that are not really minor. Truth is – your doctor can sort out basically all your teeth alignment needs with traditional braces.

Apart from these benefits, technology and esthetics have also not passed them by! Modern traditional braces are much more comfortable to wear than the original ones – and the fashion conscious ones among us can now even choose colored elastics (from a color chart, no less!) to add to our braces! Teenagers especially love this, as it gives them the opportunity to express themselves in an unconventional way.

Not Discreet

Traditional braces are still the most noticeable of all braces. However – modern metal braces will no longer get you the title of ‘metal mouth’ like in the old days. Today’s metal braces have smaller brackets and are therefore much less noticeable. The new metal braces also use heat activated arch wires that are activated by your body heat, resulting in your teeth moving faster and less painfully than in the past.

There is no need to remain self-conscious about your smile because of misaligned teeth anymore. If you would like to improve your smile and also get a confidence boost, give us a call! We will sort you out in a really caring way.

Braces Don’t Have To Be Embarrassing!

Braces Pembroke Pines FloridaBrace up

Many of us are mortally scared of visiting a dental facility. Never mind if our teeth are crooked. Then one day your ugly smile gets commented upon in a social gathering and you begin to brood. A friend then recommends a visit to an orthodontist at Southwest Ranch to see whether there is hope for you. Imagine your joy when you are told that in lingual braces, they have just the right treatment for you and continues to rattle out the procedure involved. You are all attention and inwardly, already smiling in anticipation of getting a great smile just like so many others around you

What is so special?

The need of getting braces having been defined, you are ready to go through the routine. You would naturally like to discuss the pros and cons of various options available. How would you feel when you hear about invisible braces that have ceramic brackets that almost take the color of your teeth? How about clear plastic aligners? There are options galore and perhaps you need to settle for Lingual braces that arguably are the most invisible contraptions for the amount they cost. Near invisibility is achieved by imaginative placement of the braces in your mouth. You wear braces but nobody can notice them.

The biggest advantage of these behind the scene braces is cosmetic. If you thought ceramic braces would serve a similar purpose too but remember, while they have ceramic bracket the color of your teeth, the wires would still be visible. Not so in Lingual braces unless someone literally probes the insides of your mouth like your orthodontist.

Must know

The only categories of patients who may not find these workable are the ones with very small teeth or huge ‘overbite’ issues. Some may have problems in adjusting to these initially as positioning of the tongue gets affected with consequent effects on your capacity to talk or swallow. There could also be a higher chance of plaque buildup but if you are visiting your dentist regularly, why worry about these peripheral issues. You want your smile and looks back don’t you and in doing so, want to keep it as discreet as possible.

And you smile ever after

The Southwest Ranch orthodontist will first take an impression of your mouth and then sends it to a dental lab for getting customized braces made. The procedure is hi-tech and uses CAD/CAM for designing. Wires are worked through advanced robotic technology. The six week wait will be worth it and then you just have to go through a precise procedure to have the braces cemented onto your teeth. After that it is a matter of time before your teeth get aligned and you can then smile with gay abandon!
